The goals of the Feinberg Initiative will be met by sequencing whole genomes of carefully selected cases of Alzheimer’s disease and in carefully selected normal elderly individuals. The initiative will identify the differences in the coding sequence and compare the frequency of these differences with those found in normal individuals. This effort will make two major contributions:
- We will better understand the pathways that lead to the development of Alzheimer’s disease, allowing the development of novel ideas about prevention.
- We will be much better able to predict the individual risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
